Book: The Designing for Growth Field Book by Liedtka et al

Reviews

This is a ‘how to’ book…

…which takes you through the process of Design Thinking.

So, first, what is Design Thinking? My take is that it involves following certain ideas about how to develop new products or services. The key principles are:

  • understanding people’s experience (in the area you are developing new ideas)
  • developing a number of ideas through a process of divergence (allowing for contradictory thinking) and then convergence (bringing ideas together)
  • developing rough ideas and prototypes that can be tested out with the intention that they won’t be right, and that the ‘failure’ can deliver further insight and development opportunities
  • developing a business process that brings together team members from different disciplines and truly commits to put innovation at the heart of the business

If Design Thinking is for you and you want to do it, then this book will help you. It outlines the process and then gives you a large number of resources to help you develop ideas (through creative workshops).

Pair with Change By Design by Tim Brown. Apparently Design Thinking is where it’s at. So worth a read!
